About Me
I am currently a dietetic intern at the University of Virginia Health System. A Mississippi native, I have a powerful passion for all things related to food, and more importantly a powerful respect the nourishment that food provides for our bodies. I started out as a history major at Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi, due to my fascination with learning about new cultures and people. I became extremely interested in nutrition after working at Smoothie King -- one slow afternoon at work I found an old binder of herbal supplements and natural remedies that I began reading in my spare time. This began my process of connecting the natural world (and thus the foods we eat) to the processes and ailments that affect the body. I also began to notice the impacts of nutrition on many chronic diseases that are so prevalent in Mississippi, and from there toyed around with the idea of switching my major. I decided to transfer to the University of Mississippi to study nutrition, and I graduated with my Bachelor of Science in Dietetics and Nutrition in May 2012.
From there, I moved 800 miles away to attend the University of Virginia Health System Dietetic Internship, where I have been exploring various dietetic areas more in depth. I have a strong commitment and belief in leaving the world better than you found it, and there is no better area to work in than in nutrition. Growing up the deep south, I have been witness to the terrible impacts and costs of nutrition-related diseases, and this awareness has led me to dedicate my life to helping others make healthier lifestyle choices. Because of this, I hope to explore a career in community or clinical nutrition although at this point I am open to many different career paths. I am currently studying for the exam to become a Registered Dietitian, and I hope to eventually get a Master's Degree in Public Health to further explore this area. In my spare time, I love to do anything outdoors, read nerdy books, work on growing a (very small) garden, and staying entertained by my dog Eliot. |
