Volunteer Experiences
International Service Learning
- I joined a team of pre-health students travelling to Costa Rica and Panama to set up clinics in low income neighborhoods and provide needed medical attention.
- My responsibilities included talking with the patients (in Spanish!), getting their weights, blood pressure, and pulse, and discussing the patients with the physician.
- We also hosted a fun event for children in the neighborhood on the last day of the week, where we passed out prizes and played games.
- For this position, I was in charge of a feeding ministry that ran through a local church. On Thursday afternoons, we prepared and delivered meals for over 100 people signed up for the program.
- My responsibilities included planning the menu, shopping for ingredients, and overseeing the entire preparation of the meal and volunteers in the kitchen.
- This is a local effort at the farmer's market to get children to consume more fruits and vegetables.
- We provided children with $2 to buy any fruit or vegetable they desired, had a quick cooking demo, a taste test of unique fruits, and discussed some basic nutrition principles.
- Two other interns and I gave a healthy holiday cooking demonstration to local seniors.
- We were each responsible for developing a menu item and giving the demonstration for the recipe.
- I volunteered to help with the registration and implementation of this walk in Charlottesville to promote awareness of eating disorders.
